Dear Colleagues,

International Breast Ultrasound (SENUS) Course will be held during 21-22 October 2023 in Istanbul for the third time as a part of the SENATURK’s “Breast Master Class” Diploma Program. The overwhelming feedback from the attendees of the previous courses urged us to continue organizing this course next year as well. This workshop is specially designed for dedicated senologists, breast radiologists and surgeons with its curriculum and objectives including both diagnostic and interventional competencies.

Today, contemporary practice in breast care requires image-aided diagnosis, treatment and surveillance. Ultrasound is the most feasible, mobile and cheap tool for these tasks. Technology each passing day transforms this handy tool into a smaller and more accurate device. Apart from technological advancements in imaging, improvements in breast cancer treatment urge surgical resections to become more limited. Nonetheless, along with these cutting-edge changes, interventional ablation and resection techniques are underway for the benefit of cancer patients. In the near future, we believe that most patients will be treated by image-guided resection or ablation techniques before or after systemic treatments.

Therefore, it will be paramount for surgeons to become competent with ultrasound imaging and its utility for guiding both wide local excisions and minimal invasive lesion ablations. As the role of surgeons is evolving to a multi-task physician, we recommend breast surgeons be trained and become competent in reconstructive surgery, molecular oncology, pathology and as well as breast imaging in order to become contemporary “breast physicians/specialists”. Surgeons would continue to dominate the field of breast oncology as being the only physicians dealing with the management of the organs’ other diseases/conditions, only if they show the willingness to expand their competencies.

The International SENUS course program includes theoretical lectures and hands-on training on live models/patients and phantom models fabricated for this training. The course faculty mostly composed of experienced international radiologists and UEMS board-certified breast surgeons who already use ultrasound every day in their outpatient clinics and theaters. The language of the workshop will be English. Small-group modules will be held in order to provide the trainees with maximum opportunity for individual training under coaching. Therefore registration is open to only 24 trainees.

For more than 25 years ultrasound in breast surgery evolved and became a part of routine practice. In the hands of breast surgeons, ultrasonography is a time-saving, cost-reducing device. In many publications, it is proven that ultrasonography both preoperatively and perioperatively increases breast health service quality.
